Tutoring as a university student in Switzerland: getting started
Choose subjects you can explain, plan around your studies and prepare carefully before offering your first tutoring lesson.

Start with what you can explain confidently
A good grade does not automatically make a good lesson. Choose a subject and level where you can explain the reasoning clearly. Think about how you would show a second approach if your first explanation did not help.
Make your offer specific: fractions for lower-secondary learners is clearer than maths for everyone. Only name exams and curricula you genuinely understand.
Allow for more than teaching time
Preparation, messages and travel for in-person lessons all take time. Begin with a few reliable slots and check your own exam schedule before committing to appointments.
- Which subjects and levels can I teach confidently?
- Which times can I maintain during term?
- How much preparation does a lesson need?
- Will I teach online, in person or both?
Describe your background honestly
Explain what you study and which experiences help you teach. Supporting a study group or helping a sibling can be relevant, but should not be presented as a formal teaching qualification.
Do not describe yourself as a qualified schoolteacher if you are still training. Check the work, insurance and residence conditions that apply to you before starting. Registering on a platform does not settle these questions.
Agree on a goal before the first lesson
Ask for the topic, school level and a current sample exercise. Discuss whether the learner wants to understand a concept, work on homework or prepare for an exam. Request only the materials you need to prepare.
Choose a small goal for the first hour, such as solving one kind of problem independently. Do not promise a particular grade or exam result.
Create an offer that fits your life
You can create a tutor profile and lesson listings on LernLink for free. Describe your teaching, set your earnings and add availability and a package. You can also share your profile link with people who already know your teaching.
Publishing gives you a way to present your lessons. It does not guarantee enquiries or bookings. Refine your description when you notice questions it has not answered.
