Understanding Swiss school levels as a tutor

Understand primary, secondary and Gymnasium terminology, and ask the right questions about canton, materials and learning goals.

Start with the canton and school

A school label alone is not enough to plan a lesson. Education pathways in Switzerland are organised cantonally. Ask about canton, school level, teaching materials and the current topic instead of assuming a year-group label means one fixed level of knowledge.

This overview helps you prepare. For binding admission requirements, exams and deadlines, consult the school or the relevant cantonal education authority.

Primary level: make foundations understandable

The Swiss education overview includes kindergarten or the first learning cycle within primary level. For tutoring, what matters is the work the child is doing now and which foundations need attention.

Use familiar exercises and accessible examples. Ask which calculation or writing method has been introduced at school. A different method may otherwise create extra confusion.

Lower secondary: check the specific expectations

Lower-secondary education follows primary level. The organisation and names of ability pathways vary between cantons. A label such as Sek therefore does not tell you everything about the right practice level.

Ask for a current task and feedback from the schoolteacher. This helps distinguish a missing concept from an unfamiliar question format or a need for targeted exam practice.

Upper secondary: understand the pathway

Upper-secondary education includes general and vocational pathways. A gymnasial baccalaureate, a specialised school and vocational education have different goals. Even subjects with the same name may emphasise different skills.

Ask about the specific programme, subject and upcoming assessment. Only offer help with a qualification or entrance exam when you understand its requirements.

Exam preparation is canton-specific

Zurich's central entrance examination, or ZAP, is one particular example, not a Switzerland-wide admission procedure. Use current official information and practice papers from the relevant authority. Do not apply one canton's deadlines or requirements to another.

  • Ask about canton and exact school level
  • Look at teaching materials and a sample exercise
  • Discuss a specific learning goal
  • Check exam information with the official authority
  • Never guarantee a grade or admission
